Dear Councillor,
Planning Application 15/00549/DC
Waste Recycling Facility at 865 South Street Glasgow G14 0BX
I wish to ask you as an elected representative to ensure that you carry out your duty to protect the people of Glasgow against the proposal to install a waste gasification plant in South Street, Whiteinch, Glasgow.
The main reason for my objection to this proposal relates to the Glasgow City Council planning objectives to improve the air quality in Glasgow. While the technical aspects of this proposal are the responsibility of SEPA, the following facts are clear and established:
While the proposers of this operation have failed to disclose the details of what exactly will be exuded from the gasification plant chimney, it will not be clean air any more than will be the additional heavy traffic fumes.
In the light of these facts it would be contrary to Glasgow City Council planning policy to permit a new source of air pollution in the area in question. It would also be directly contradictory of the recent Council direction to install an Air Quality Monitor in the area to authorise this development before the findings from that Monitor are known.
Yours sincerely
- The health and life expectancies of people living in Glasgow are seriously adversely limited by poor air quality.
- The whole of Glasgow City is subject to an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA)
- The proposed works involve the operation of a tall chimney stack for dispersal of waste disposal fumes and substantial traffic movement to bring waste into the area.
- Glasgow City Council has recently directed the installation of an Air Quality Monitor in the South Street area.
- Other Air Quality Monitors in Glasgow including the Monitor at nearby Byres Road/Dumbarton Road have registered “exceedencies” of adverse elements in the local air.
- While this operation is described as a Waste Recycling Facility it includes a high chimney stack which will exude matter drawn from the waste and which is clearly not being recycled but being spread over the homes, gardens, shops and schools in the surrounding area.
